As a third year medical student I am currently taking a year off for my medical thesis. The project I am working on is a partnership between Albrecht Lab and the Laboratory for Experimental Dermatology at the Otto-von-Guericke University led by Prof. Evelyn Gaffal. In my thesis I am focusing on the relationship between chronic skin inflammation and cognitive dysfunction. Although the link between inflammatory skin disorders like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis and neuropsychiatric diseases is clinically well known, a huge portion of the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. In this context I will investigate the role of the HCA2 receptor as a possible mediator, which gains gradually more attention as a possible pharmacological target in both skin and brain diseases.
