For my PhD project I am currently studying how the neuropeptide Y (NPY) system and autophagy modulate hippocampal contextual fear memory. NPY has anxiolytic properties and was found to be protective against stress-induced maladaptation and pathologies like PTSD. Autophagy is a cellular process helping proteostasis and shaping plasticity by recycling misfolded proteins, selected receptors and cell organelles. This is highly important for neurons due to their high metabolic demand and long lifetime. We are focusing on pattern separation and pattern completion as important hippocampal memory functions involving particularly the dentate gyrus (DG)– CA3 mossy fiber system.
